Reflections

Not all the cultural adjustments were uncomfortable, and some were wonderful. It was marvelous having the Boudhanath stupa ten minutes from home, and the gentleness of the people there was a refreshing change from self-centered New Yorkers. Being constantly offered food and hospitality was also very sweet. There is a lot more respect and independence (paradoxically as well as community spirit) than I’m used to living with."

- Mikaela, Personal Passage 2008

"It's true that the world does not cleanse itself of wars, does not wash off the blood, does not get over its hate. It's true. Yet, it is equally true that we are moving toward a realization. The violent ones are reflected in the mirror of the world and their faces are not pleasant to look at, not even to themselves. And I go on believing in the possibility of love. I am convinced that there will be mutual understanding among human beings, achieved in spite of all the suffering, the blood, the broken glass" - Pablo Neruda (from Memoirs pg. 274)

- Megan, Personal Passage 2007

"I believe the beauty of a country is not to be found in its landmarks and tourist spots but by the people it possesses. Sure you remember the sights and sounds but what makes it special is the friendships that were created. The Potala Palace and all its grandeur was a sight but it will never compare to being a part of a surprise birthday party for a woman who is larger than life and has touched so many lives for the better and for a son to truly demonstrate what love is by doing whatever it takes to put a smile on the face of that woman. Thank you for letting me be a part of such a great moment."

- Kahlil, Personal Passage 2007
